Overview

Titanium CNC machining for spec'd programs

Titanium sits in a different bracket from our catalog aluminum and stainless work: it is available on request for programs that legitimately need it, not bid as everyday production. The reason is honesty about what titanium asks of a shop. It cuts at a fraction of the surface speed of stainless. Heat does not evacuate in the chip the way it does in steel — the workpiece holds the heat, which means tooling, coolant pressure, and feed strategy have to be planned around thermal management or tool life collapses. Galling, smearing, and the risk of chip ignition on fine swarf are all real considerations. Done right, titanium delivers an extraordinary specific-strength part: half the density of steel, comparable tensile strength on Ti-6Al-4V, near-immunity to corrosion in seawater and biological environments, and a fatigue performance profile that earns it a place on rotating aerospace hardware and load-bearing surgical implants. We take titanium work when the program specifies it, the geometry fits the network's 5-axis envelope or Swiss-type capacity, and the lead-time conversation is realistic about the slower cycle.

Grades We Machine

Titanium alloys on request

Ti-6Al-4V (Grade 5)

The dominant aerospace and medical titanium alloy — roughly half of all titanium produced. Alpha-beta alloy with 6 percent aluminum, 4 percent vanadium. Tensile strength comparable to mid-range alloy steels at 56 percent of the density. Specified on airframe brackets, fasteners, rotating components, and orthopedic and dental implants. Grade 23 (ELI, extra low interstitial) is the medical-implant variant with tighter oxygen and iron limits.

Grade 2 CP Titanium

Commercially pure titanium, alpha phase, unalloyed. Lower strength than Ti-6Al-4V but more formable, more weldable, and even more corrosion resistant. Specified on chemical-process equipment, marine hardware, and medical components where corrosion performance matters more than strength.

Other titanium grades — Grade 1, Grade 4 CP, Grade 23 ELI, Grade 5 STA, and beta alloys — are available against specific drawings. Mill certifications and full lot traceability ship with every titanium job as a matter of course; the alloy is too consequential to run without paperwork.

Applications

Where titanium parts go

Aerospace Structural Rotating Components Medical Implants Surgical Instruments Defense Hardware Marine Chemical Process

Titanium ships on programs where its specific strength or corrosion resistance is the entire point: airframe brackets and fittings, engine-adjacent hardware, defense optics mounts that have to survive thermal cycling without distortion, marine deck and subsea components, and medical work spanning orthopedic implants, dental abutments, and reusable surgical instruments. We will not quote titanium for jobs where aluminum or stainless would do the work just as well — the cost penalty rarely justifies it.

Tolerance, Finish & Lead Time

What to expect on titanium

Machined tolerances on titanium ship at the same routine ±.0002" class as other materials. Cycle times run materially longer than equivalent stainless features — surface speeds on Ti-6Al-4V typically half of 304 stainless — so lead-time expectations on titanium jobs need to account for that on the front end. Surface finish on a finish pass runs 32 Ra or better. Bead blasting and vapor blasting are available within the network for uniform matte and satin finishes. Anodizing (Type II / Type III for color and identification), passivation, and any plating processes are coordinated with qualified finishers on the program's schedule.
